Butterflies & Hummingbirds: Plant Sale and Classes

Alan Shapiro of Grandiflora Nursery in Gainesville, a noted expert in native plants, will be bringing a selection of plants for sale to benefit Nehrling Gardens. Please see below for a sample of the plants that will be available.

Alan will also be giving two talks on gardening for butterflies and hummingbirds during the sale. Please see below for his bio.

  • Date: Saturday, July 8 at Nehrling Gardens
  • 9:00 – 1:00 Plant Sale (Gardens remain open until 3:00 PM)
  • 10:00 AM & 12 noon: Talks by Alan Shapiro: Gardening to Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds.


  • The focus will be on butterfly and hummingbird attracting plants and native plants, and will include some unusual varieties.
  • Most plants will be in 1 gallon pots and retail for $4 – $5, proceeds to benefit Nehrling Gardens.

Alan is owner of Grandiflora, a 106-acre wholesale nursery specializing in perennials and other hard-to-find plants in Gainesville FL. In 2003, the nursery was named Ornamental Outlook Magazine’s “Operation of the Year”.
