Surinam Cherry

  • Origin: Native to Brazil
  • Description: Small, multi-branched evergreen shrub or tree with dense canopy. Grows up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Short, oval-shaped shiny dark green leaves and white, fragrant flowers. Grows red berries and fleshy, juicy, orange fruit. Young stems have red hairs and dark new foliage.
  • Environment: Grows in most soil types in subtropical and tropical climates. Flowers throughout the year and fruit develops and ripens in 3-4 weeks from flowering. Best in full sun and drought tolerant. Irrigation is necessary in areas with little rainfall. Flowers attract bees, bats, and birds and fruit attracts birds, lizards, and mammals.
  • Additional Information: Plant supplies medicine and is used as insect repellent. Fruit is edible and made into jams, jellies, pies, and juices. Listed on the Florida Invasive Species Council 2023 List of Invasive Plant Species.
