Lake Nally Shoreline

  • Name: Lake Nally Shoreline
  • Description: The lake originally was named Lake Audubon by Henry Nehrling in recognition of the great ornithologist John James Audubon (1785-1851). It was renamed Lake Nally in memory of Julian and Margaret Nally who owned the property from 1933-1977.
  • Additional Information: Nehrling once had extensive lath shade houses along the lakeshore where he researched and propagated many shade loving tropical plants including over 1700 named varieties of caladiums. Today the lakeshore provides habitat for a diversity of wildlife, including manyh species of local and migratory birds. Volunteers continue to remove undesirable plants, replaccing them with native species such as winged sumac that provide food and shelter. The silver stripe bamboo clumps provide protection for the smaller birds. This body of water is classified as a slough, which is a wetland, usually a swamp or shallow lake. It is not spring fed but is sustained by rainfall and the natural water table.
