  • Origin: Native to southeastern United States
  • Description: A flowering plant with dark green, glossy, and elliptical leaves. Grows up to 4 – 10 feet and 4 – 8 feet wide. Leaves are arranged in opposite pairs with prominent stems. When crushed, they emit a coffee-like aroma. The plant grows small, tubular, white to cream-colored flowers. Grows small, round, red and black berries.
  • Environment: Thrives in well-drained soils and partial to full shade. Hardy plant that adapts to its subtropical and tropical climates of its native range. Moderate drought tolerance. The berries are important for wildlife. Provides habitat and cover.
  • Additional Information: Seeds can be used as a caffeine-free coffee substitute when roasted.
